April 17th will soon be here and I am excited to be part of the runners that will be participating this year in the most prestigious marathon in the world, Boston. Boston, just Boston, as it’s known to the people in the running world. It is a privilege to participate as it will be my 7th in 6 mos.
The marathon is held yearly on the 3rd Monday of April, Patriots Day. The sport was founded in 1887 by the Boston Athletic Association and has over 25,000 runners. The viewers and spectators have grown to over 500,000 people. This makes it one of the most viewed sporting events while also hosting 1000 media members from more than 100 media outlets. The marathon is the oldest continuous running in the world.
On April 15th 2013 at 2:49 p.m. a tragedy occurred during the race. Two homemade bombs went off near the finish line killing three people and injured over 200 people leaving others without limbs. The shooting that followed also killed more people leaving the total number of registered deaths at 6 and injuries at 280. This was a sad day that is marked in the history of the Boston Marathon. This tragedy motivated me to run this race.
